Five Things You Should Know About the
Unification Church (Moonies)
P. Johnson
1.) A Look Back.
The Unification church is a communal organization. Its
leader, Sun Myung Moon, claims to be the second Christ and
is promoting his beliefs through his book Divine
Principle and through the tireless work of his
followers.
Moon views theology through different time periods during
which God attempted to use a man to bring perfection, man
left in unfinished failure, and God responded in judgment.
There are specifically 3 time periods: Foundation of
Restoration, the Restoration, and the Prolongation of
Restoration. During these periods man was to be progressing
to perfection and God chose to use Adam, Noah, Abraham,
Elijah, the Judges, the prophets, Jesus, and Sun Myung Moon.
While we would accept a view of history which recognizes
time periods of growth and revealed truth, Christians
believe that God has consistently been revealing his program
to man. An example of this may be seen in the biblical
doctrine of justification by faith. See Habakkuk 2:4 Romans
4; Galatians 3:11; Hebrews 10:38; Hebrews 11.
2.) Who is God?
According
to the Unification church teachings, God is not an eternal
trinity, but rather God is dualistic or reflects all of the
pair and contrasts we see in the world. Let me explain. We
recognize in our space time continuum good and bad, man and
woman, spiritual and physical, hot and cold, and many such
dualisms. God did not choose to create a universe (Genesis
1-3) but rather, the entire natural world is a projection or
extension of God which is a complete material expression of
God’s dualism – expressly God the Father and the Holy
Spirit.
This view makes Jesus a mere
man who failed at wholly saving mankind. He was the only man
to live a life of perfection, but in teaching he was
performing the work of John the Baptist who failed in
disbelief. The real work of Jesus was to introduce a pure
race to earth again by co habiting with a perfected woman.
Before he could accomplish this, he was crucified! God was
able to raise him, but only to a spiritual existence, and as
such he could not generate a physical race. He was able to
unite with the Holy Spirit and begin spiritual salvation. In
Moon’s world, to be born again into this salvation means to
be spawned by Christ and the Holy Spirit. These two become
our Spiritual Father and Mother.
In contrast, Christians believe in the doctrine of the
Trinity, (Deuteronomy 6:4) We believe that God created the
world, through His Son, Jesus Christ, and everything He does
is good (Colossians 1:16-18, Genesis 1:1,31)
3.) Who is Man?
The Moonies argue that man finds himself trapped in a
physical world of evil and selfish passions. His only hope
is adoption into the perfected family. Those in the family
are required to engage in spreading he message. They work
tirelessly at reaching new converts through any method
possible, from political involvement to education to
deception. Each man must work for himself, for the salvation
of his past family, and for the salvation of those now
living. Since regeneration or perfection is reached through
being in the family, marriages are arranged by Sun Myung
Moon and are a sacred religious act of dedication and
blessing. At death man’s physical body dissolves and he
comes back in spirit form to continue reaching out to man
for this salvation. Learning to love God and love man builds
good into our spirit beings.
In reality, the work of
Christ on the cross was payment for the debt of sin that we
owed (1Peter 1:19). Nothing I can do will aide me or anyone
else in gaining acceptance with God (Isaiah 64:6). Christ’s
resurrection was proof that God accepted the sacrifice and
demonstration of the power of change that God works in us
(Ephesians 1:19, 20). The Bible says that man was created in
the image of God (Genesis 1).
4.) Where did evil come from?
This group teaches that the Garden of Eden was the perfect
material expression of God. Adam and Eve were placed there
to progress to perfection. Man and woman were, as an act of
worship, to generate perfect people for all of time. The
tree of life represented man, and the tree of knowledge of
good and evil represented woman. By commanding them not to
eat the fruit, God was telling them to refrain from sexual
relations for the time. Lucifer, God’s chief messenger, was
jealous of God’s love for mankind, and decided to step in
and change the plan. He entered the world and seduced Eve.
After exploiting her and changing her to evil, she seduced
Adam. By violating God’s command and by union with Lucifer,
the father and mother of the race were changed to evil, and
all their descendants would be evil, as united with Lucifer.
Thus, original win was fornication and adultery.
Original sin was violating
the command of God, and each man is born into sin with a
sinful nature. Satan is the arch-enemy of God and His desire
is to be like the most High (Isaiah 14:14). His plan
includes anti-Christ, and manipulating this world to be
against God and His plan of fellowship.
5.) A Look Forward.
Since Christ was unable to finish His work, Unification
followers look forward to a “Lord of the Second Advent.”
This coming king will establish His kingdom as a family of
perfect beings. He will be the perfect man who will unite
with the perfect woman and spawn a new perfect race. The
marriage supper of the Lamb and the Bride of Christ take on
very different meanings from the biblical concept of
scriptural reunion between Christ and His body, the church,
to Moonie concept of the new messiah and his divine marriage
which will produce a new race. The spirit beings will return
from hell and paradise to earn their salvation and adoption
for those in the world. In the end, all will be unified in
God, and hell will be emptied and abolished.
We, on the other hand,
believe that Christ will return in Glory to judge mankind’s
rebellion and establish his kingdom of righteousness and
justice on earth. There will be an eternal state of
fellowship with God or punishment in hell (Revelation). You
can choose today to enter heaven by accepting Christ’s
finished sacrifice on your behalf.
