5 Things You Should Know About Sin

by Je. Georgeff, J. Kunnari

1.) The Nature of Sin.

In order to understand the nature of sin we must first understand the character of God.  The Creator of the universe is righteous in all His ways and gracious in all His works (Ps 145:17).    God can do no wrong, due to his perfect and holy character. Psalm 71:19 “Also your righteousness Oh God is very high, You, who have done great things, Oh God, who is like You?”  Therefore, sin is anything that is contrary to the nature of God.  John 5:17 says “All our unrighteousness is sin.”  This includes not only actions or things that we do but also the thoughts of our minds, the intentions and motivations of our hearts.  It encompasses our all.

2.) The Origin of Sin.

In the beginning God created Adam and Eve in His image, flawless and sinless, but also with a will.  They had the choice to either obey God and live in complete fellowship with Him or disobey God and be cursed with sin and its consequences.  With the temptation from Satan to disobey God, Adam and Eve chose to usurp God's authority and thus the curse of sin originated (Gen 3:14-19).  Romans 5:12 says “Just as through one man (Adam) sin entered the world ...”  Because of Adam, sin spread to every generation after him all through history and that is why our world today is full of sin. God's Word tells us in Ecclesiastes 7:20 that there is not a just man on earth who does good and does not sin.  We see then that man is inherently sinful because we all originate in Adam.

3.) The Disillusionment of Sin.

The problem with sin is that it never brings true satisfaction or fulfillment.  Due to a spiritual void in every man, his tendency is to always search for something to fill that void.  Man will never naturally turn to Christ; rather, he seeks his fulfillment in his own lusts.  Man often chooses to enjoy “the pleasures of sin for a season,” (Heb. 11:24,25) but this is exactly the problem.  Sin will only be enjoyed for a season for it cannot and will not ever bring lasting joy and satisfaction.

4.) The Result of Sin.

Every choice leads to a consequence and because of Adam and Eve's wrong choice, we today are still reaping the consequences.  God specifically told Adam that the result of his disobedience would be death.  Not only would this result in physical death but in spiritual death, an eternal separation from God.  Romans 5:12 says “Therefore, just as sin came into the world through one man, and death through sin, and so death spread to all men because all sinned.”   Romans 6:23a “For the wages of sin is death.”  Although this is the ultimate result of sin, there are many physical ramifications that are seen in the world today such as war, strife, families torn apart, disease, suicide and so much more.

5.) The Cure for Sin.

Although the results of sin are so universally devastating, God has provided a cure. Romans 6:23 says “The wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ.”.  God cannot accept us as we are, full of sin. This has produced a massive gulf between man and God which man can never bridge independently. However, God has bridged this gulf through His Son Jesus Christ.   1 Peter 2:24 says “He himself bore our sins in his body on the tree, that we might die to sin and live to righteousness. By his wounds you have been healed.”  God has provided a freedom from sin that can only be attained through faith in Jesus Christ's death on the cross.  This gift is free to all who will accept it.  Have you accepted this free gift?
